Broadway Across America

The CITIZENS OPERA HOUSE first opened in 1928 as the B. F. Keith Memorial Theatre. It was commissioned by Keith’s collaborator Edward Albee as a tribute to his late business partner and friend Benjamin Franklin Keith, the originator and leading impresario of refined vaudeville entertainment that flourished in North America from the late 1800s until the 1930s. Thomas White Lamb, the most accomplished theater architect of his day, was hired to bring all of his experience and skills to bear with a mandate to “spare no expense” in tribute to Keith. Since a full $50 million restoration was completed in 2004, the results of Lamb’s genius and the work of the world’s leading craftsmen past and present are here in the Citizens Opera House for you to enjoy – regal surroundings, clear and proximate sightlines and near-perfect acoustics. Every seat in the house is a good seat.

Broadway In Boston has an ongoing commitment to building new audiences and making theatre accessible for all patrons. During each season, Broadway In Boston offers American Sign Language, Open Captioned, and Audio Described performances for most productions at the Citizens Opera House. If you would like to receive emails about upcoming accessible performances, please email ADABoston [at] BroadwayInBoston [dot] com and note your interest in American Sign Language, Open Captioning, and/or Audio Description.

Accessible seating can be found on Ticketmaster when purchasing your tickets.

During American Sign Language performances, skilled theatrical Interpreters use American Sign Language to interpret the performances on stage. The Interpreters work with a Deaf ASL Consultant to translate the production into American Sign Language. The audience can see both the Interpreters and the stage action simultaneously.

Tickets for American Sign Language interpreted performances can be purchased HERE using the promo code ASL.

Please see below for relevant ASL Performances at the Citizens Opera House.

Open Captioning is a form of accessibility for the deaf and hard of hearing population in the United States. The c2net.org website describes Open Captioning as “text displayed simultaneous to live speech, dialogue or performance”. This technology is now utilized by theaters nationwide. It provides hearing impaired patrons with the complete script and song text for live performances on small screens directly adjacent to audience seating. For more comprehensive information on Open Captioning visit www.c2net.org.

Tickets for Open Captioned performances can be purchased HERE using the promo code OPENCAPTION.

Please see the below dates for relevant Open Captioned Performances at the Citizens Opera House.
